Can bricks used to build chimneys breath?

I was told that brick is pourous? When you waterproof the chimney, the repellent allows the brick to breath out and keep water from coming in. Is it possible that air can get in through the brick?

1Don't worry about the porosity, think about the heat. Get heatproof bricks or line the chimney.
